As a project for work, I was asked to delve into the world of fan pages on Facebook. I looked at the possibility of setting up some of our programs with fan pages and what it would take to accomplish this task. Creating a page was quite easy and I demonstrated this by creating a page for an old stop motion, holiday character known as the Heat Miser. I’m not sure why I settled on this character, but I knew he had a catchy song (I’m Mister Heat Miser, I’m Mister Sun) that I could find on YouTube and then post to the fan page. After building the page and posting it on Facebook, I moved onto my next project, not giving the fan page a second thought. Now what happened next is what amazed me…The Heat Miser began to accumulate other fans? It began with one, three, seven, twenty, fifty then 100. With the rate at which new people were becoming fans of the Heat Miser soon crossed over 1,000. Wow, what’s going on here??? All of this grew out of a goofy project and now I’m dealing with nearly 12,000 fans of a old animated television holiday classic.
UPDATE: Facebook has caught on to my fake fan page and I have had to surrender ownership.
